28 States of India and their Capitals, Languages & Formation Dates

Till 2019, India had 29 States and 7 Union Territories but in 2019 the Parliament of India passed an act by which the state of Jammu and Kashmir was broken down into two union territories of Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir. Subsequently in 2020, Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadar & Nagar Haveli were merged together to form a new Union Territory by the name of “Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu”.

  • India has had 8 union territories since January 26, 2020. The union territories of Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have merged into one.
  • The central government also announced on August 5 that the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 would be revoked, and that the state would be divided into: Jammu and Kashmir UTs and Ladakh UTs.
  • The number of UTs has shrunk to eight following the merger of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
